Fran Kranz is best known to fans as Topher on Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse, Cabin in the Woods and Much Ado About Nothing. It has been confirmed that he will star in The Dark Tower, a film adaptation of Stephen King’s novel. He is set to play Pimli Prentiss, a character who wasn’t actually introduced until the 7th book of the series.
In the novel, Pimli works directly for the Crimson King, as a prison warden type. He feels somewhat troubled working for the King though. According to THR, his character in the film will be ‘the right hand man of the Man in Black’ which is a drastic change from the novels. But if they are adapting all seven books into one film, they will need some fairly big changes. Two of the other characters announced so far also come from the latter half of the book series.
The Dark Tower is based on Stephen King’s book series that serves as a sort of ‘creative spine’ for nearly all of his fiction. There are alot of parallel worlds within it and crossovers into his other books such as IT, The Stand, Salem’s Lot, Dreamcatcher and many more. The author himself becomes a character in the story for a little while as do some of his favourite characters and elements from Marvel Comics and Harry Potter. Fran Kanz joins Idris Elba (Roland Deschain aka the last Gunslinger) and Matthew McConaughey (the Man in Black) who were both confirmed for this movie earlier.
The Dark Tower movie is set to be released in 2017 on January 13th.
